Use in practice “hub&spoke” model in shipping has marked a new stage in port development, which include the formation of large node centers, so-called “hub ports”. At the same time there is no commonly used general definition of a term “hub port”, and characteristics of hub ports used in literature very seriously. The goal of the article is to set up a definition of a hub port, figure out its role and significance in transport system.

The article deals with provisions that open up to Russian freight traffic using the Caspian transport route TRACECA, and the potential of the North-South corridor with Iranian Railway, through the Iranian port of Amirabad in the Black Sea and Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf. The necessity of development of Russian waterways with the transport route from Central Russia via the Caspian Sea (the port of Astrakhan and Olya), as well as the creation of a trans-Caspian economic cluster.
The article highlights the current state and features of customs logistics in the area of express delivery services, as well as points out prospects and tendencies in this scope, considering an international experience.

Transportation of cargo in containers turned ports into multifunctional transport nodes. Sole specialization, existence of single hinterland, emergence on the St. Petersburg and Leningrad region container market of strong newcomers – all this influenced greatly the competition level in the industry. The goal of the article is to set out the ways of raising regional container terminals competitiveness. For this purpose current status and prospects of development of container business in St. Petersburg and Leningrad region will be defined.
